What is a City Academy?
A City Academy is a Secondary School for students aged 11 to 18. At Walsall the Academy is a new building and caters for students of all abilities ranging from the most able to those with special educational needs.
Who can apply?
Free education is provided for all students. There are no fees and applications are invited from eligible students whatever their ability.
Are parents/guardians involved in the school?
Parents/Guardians will form an important part of the partnership with students and staff. This will allow a total involvement in their child’s education. Each student has a personal tutor who will be the key point of contact between school and home. A Parent’s Council has been established and elections are held during the Spring Term. The Council meets once every half term.
Does the Academy deliver the National Curriculum?
The curriculum focuses on Technology which supports all aspects of the curriculum. In Years 7 to 11 in addition to the National Curriculum students whom also have the opportunity to experience a broader range of curriculum opportunities. In the Sixth Form there are a range of courses both vocational and academic.
Are students taught for a longer day?
Yes. Students begin session at 8.30am in the morning and finish session at 4.00pm. There are also the opportunities for further sessions until 6.00pm.
Will students have a School uniform?
Students in Years 7 to 11 will be expected to wear a School uniform and the Sixth Form students will be 'dressed for the office'.
How big are the teaching groups?
There will be a maximum class size of 24 students in Years 7 to 11 and groups of no more than 16 in the Sixth Form.
Is there a Student Council?
Yes. There are representatives from each year group on the Student Council which meets with the Head once every half term.
Are there opportunities for students to be involved in Sporting Activities in addition to those delivered within the curriculum?
Yes. There are a range of sporting activities available for students of all ages which are organised during the Session 3 Programme.
Can students have additional Music Lessons?
Yes. The Music Academy which is organised during Session 3 provides the opportunity for individual and small group music lessons in a range of music disciplines.
Is there opportunity to work with Industry?
The Director of Careers and Industrial links has the responsibility to establish working relationships with Industry to enable students to experience the expectations of the world of work.
What food is available at the Academy?
The Academy is able to offer students and staff a wide selection of food, much of which is available every day. Items from the specials menu are also available on specific days.
