On 9-10 November 2005 Ofsted Inspectors visited the Academy to carry out a school inspection under Section 5 of the Education Act 2005.

‘The Academy provides a good education for its students’
In the paragraph reporting on the overall effectiveness of the school, the inspectors have written
- students achieve well
- results at GCSE/GNVQ and Advanced level in 2005 indicate good achievement in relation to students’ starting points on joining the Academy.
- students’ personal development and well being are outstanding
- behaviour is excellent
- students are considerate of each other and have mature attitudes to their studies
- students enjoy being at the Academy, the attendance rate is outstandingly high
- support provided for students’ future economic well-being is excellent
- focus on students’ safety is good
- students are well cared for and supported
- teaching and learning are generally good
- the curriculum is broad and rich, with a number of distinctive features
- the quality of leadership and management is good overall
- governance is good
- resources are deployed effectively and efficiently
The inspectors have advised the Academy that it has good capacity to improve towards excellence. To do so they advise that the Academy should:
- provide teachers with better assessment information to aid planning and raise achievement
- make better use of the outcomes of monitoring and evaluation to determine priorities for development
- evaluate the sixth-form provision to inform and guide its future development
