Walsall Academy - A Different Choice of School

Walsall Academy Sponsors

The Mercers' Company and Thomas Telford School have generously funded the school in joint partnership with the Government. This means that the Academy can provide non-fee paying education to all the students.

The Mercers' Company of the City of London

The Mercers' Company, the premier Livery Company of London, had its first charter granted by Richard III in 1394 but its origins are much older. Best known Mercers' include Sir Richard (Dick) Whittington, Sir Thomas Gresham and Sir Thomas Moore. Since ceasing to act as an association of merchants in overseas trade the Company has developed into a charitable and educational foundation.

Thomas Telford School

One of fifteen City Technology Colleges, part of the Specialist Schools Programme which opened in September 1991. Sponsored by The Mercers' Company and Tarmac Group Ltd it was the first comprehensive school where 100% of students achieved 5+ GCSE grades at A*- C. Thomas Telford has developed On-Line Learning Courses in ICT for use nationwide and its involvement in the Walsall Academy is an example of the School's commitment to education in the West Midlands.
